Getting your Bank Verification Number (BVN) Outside Nigeria
To increase security and to prevent bank customers in Nigeria from illegal transactions the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) implemented a new verification system for customers of Nigerian banks called the Bank Verification Number. BVN affects Nigerians, Nigerians in the Diaspora and other customers of Nigerian banks. BVN is a unique number for customers of Nigerian banks which is linked to the biometric details of the customer and each of his/her bank accounts. The biometric details include fingerprints of all ten (10) fingers of the customer and his/her picture.
Bank customers in Nigeria had to get their BVN before October 31, 2015 to prevent access to their account being limited. However, for bank customers located outside Nigeria, the deadline was extended to January 31, 2016.
How BVN Works.
- Customer visits a Nigerian bank or an enrollment center, with required information and gives his biometric details
- After a few weeks, the customer is assigned a Bank Verification Number (BVN)
- The customer will need to link his Bank Verification Number to each of his accounts in order to continue using them.
- Transactions performed from any of the customers accounts in any bank in Nigeria can be traced by to the customer.
- After 10 years, the BVN expires and customers will have to register for BVN again.
Requirements for getting your BVN outside Nigeria
– A valid identification (ID); International Passport, Driver’s License card or National ID Card.
– Your Account Name and Account Number
– A recent passport photograph
– Enrolment fee (the amount depends on location of the BVN centres)
